Hi, my name is Mitch Freund. I was born and raised Catholic, and followed my faith strictly for over 20 years. I currently live as an atheist with Buddhist tendencies. Having learned about the nasty things people have done and continue to do in the name of “God” and “Jesus,” I was unable to even step close to a church for a long time. Over the past few years, I’ve learned more about the relativity of our dual human nature. Even though other peoples’ minds (including my own) may lean to the black and white, I am training myself to see the gray. I am now exploring the religions around me by attending their religious services. Join me as I attend churches in Madison, Wisconsin and report on what I find. I look forward to your comments to my blog postings.

It’s weird to think that so many of our ancestors are buried outside of the church pictured above.
I’m really looking forward to reading about your experiences at various churches, Mitch!
Cousin Ryan
Interesting observations, Mitch…and great song…
you might wanna try Damascus Road church somewhere there in Mad-town. As for myself,
baptized Catholic, confirmed Lutheran, attend both and UCC, along with different Lutheran Denoms, have been to Pentecostal, Interdenom, Non-denom, and some that I have no clue what they were…done with religion, focusing on Christ. What scripture teaches, how He lived and trying to live by that. Too much politics, control and insincerity in “church”. Good blogging though, great perspectives. Derek recommended it, I look forward to reading more.
Hi Cyndy:
Thanks for the comments. And for reading my blog. When I first read your comment, I didn’t know what “UCC” was. I researched it and today attended my first ever service at a United Church of Christ. Look for a future blog about my experience. I’ll have to follow up on your other suggestions too. So many churches, so little time! Hope all’s well in Mayville! I’ll be sure to stop by the Celtic the next time we’re in town.
Mitch
Hi Mitch – I really enjoyed reading your blog, and love the way you are exploring the different churches.
I’m a Christian, but have struggled with church life also and actually posted a blog about this yesterday – http://mrsozzie.wordpress.com/ called ‘Following Brian’.
My faith never falters, but coping with church life & the odd ideas that breed there has been a big challenge to me at times.
Keep searching – you never know what you may discover & thanks for your honesty.
Thanks for your comment. I’ll make sure to check out your blog. I’m certainly enjoying my explorations and I am learning a lot about myself as well as others in the process. Thanks for your honesty and for reading.
Mitch, I’m happy to read of your experiences. I’m very interested in what you’ll discover about yourself, and if you’ll find that something that rings true for you.
Having inadvertantly fallen out with the Catholic church myself. (The ol’ divorce.), I haven’t found a way to make nice with them. As is, I enjoy your thoughts. Keep on the journey!
